Now fully in the swing of the new year, we look at new content featuring our dynamic borough. There are plenty of new releases from high-wired spy thrillers to classic British sitcoms, all of which were filmed within Tower Hamlets Film Office, managed by the Film Office. Take a look below at the exciting content captured on your doorstep!
Mobland
Guy Ritchie continues his small screen winning streak with fresh crime drama series for Paramount+ that packs a punch!
Hailed as his best work yet, Mobland follows two warring crime families – the Harrigans and the Stevensons – who clash in a battle that threatens to topple empires and lives. Caught in the crossfire is Harry Da Souza (played by Tom Hardy), a street-smart and formidable “fixer” tasked with mitigating the escalating conflict and prevent an all-out gang war.
From filming dialogue scenes on Westferry Road around the Took Arms pub, to shooting within a taxi across Bethnal Green, and exhuming a grave at the picturesque Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park (keep your eyes peeled for a cameo appearance from one of Tower Hamlets Park Rangers!) – the production certainly made the most of the borough!
The series is action-packed and star-studded, with Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan at the helm. Season 1 is currently available to stream on Paramount+, with new episodes released every week.
The Agency
Another thrilling crime drama from Paramount+! If international espionage is more to your taste, then The Agency could be at the top of your watchlist.
Produced by the team behind blockbuster thrillers such as Argo (2012) and Money Monster (2016) and based upon acclaimed French drama The Bureau (2016), the series follows Covert CIA agent, Martian, who is ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When a past love unexpectedly reappears, his mission, his identity and his heart are all endangered.
The production spent 4 months filming across the borough from July to September 2024. Be on the lookout for several dialogue scenes in notable areas such as Brick Lane and Wapping Pier, as well as a gripping high-stakes chase sequence between Martain and his adversaries captured on Brune Street in September.
The Agency is available to stream in full now on Paramount+. It has since been renewed for a second season – hopefully this won’t be the last time we host them!
Amandaland
Whilst crime dramas are appearing to be very ‘”in” amongst audiences at present, a laugh-out-loud British comedy is always welcomed.
As part of its Sitcom Season, BBC brings the joy with its latest comedy Amandaland – a spin-off of the hit series, Motherland. The story follows popular character, Amanda Hughes (played by Lucy Punch), as she navigates parenting teenagers in a post-divorce household.
The production was filming in the East London area for 2 months last year. Scenes within Tower Hamlets took place on Bethnal Green Road outside of Oaklands Secondary School where we see Amanada conducting school drop-offs.
All episodes are now available to stream on BBC iPlayer. The series has since been renewed for a second season and we look forward to their return to the borough in the near future.
