As the Summer months are creeping closer, filming in the borough is rapidly increasing with shoots popping up from all manner of productions in various fantastic locations. Ahead of this bustling season, we look back at what we at the Tower Hamlets Film Office, managed by The Film Office, has welcomed to the borough already in 2024. Check out some highlights below!
The Veil
Hulu Spy Thriller Original ‘The Veil’ follows two women travel from Istanbul to Paris and London in a deadly game of truth and lies, with one of them possessing a secret that the other needs to expose. This production paid a visit to Tower Hamlets for a big scene involving the Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green doubling as an MI5 building and on Trinity Square with various sequences taking place outside the hotel. Trinity Square is a fantastic location for doubling, sitting right on the border of the City of London it offers unique architecture and brilliant views of the Tower of London from inside the nearby Trinity Square Gardens. Given it’s grand architecture it’s favourable for doubling for high-status government building and even as other cities – for example Moscow most recently in Marvel’s Secret Invasion!

Baby Reindeer
Netflix’s new original drama ‘Baby Reindeer’ is gaining some serious traction on social media after it’s release in April. The drama is written by Richard Gadd and is based on a compelling true story about his warped relationship with a female stalker and the impact it has on him as he is ultimately forced to face a dark buried trauma.
The production filmed at several locations in the borough including one of our most sort after streets, Columbia Road and had a footprint in this area for a few weeks back in January on this year. Scenes took place inside a private flat for which we facilitated equipment positions and technical parking. Exterior scenes were also carried out on the street for which traffic management was in place. Baby Reindeer also filmed scenes at Hare Row for one of the many scenes involving one character following the other. Hare Row is a fantastic location for scenes such as these with it’s twists and turns and grungy atmosphere.
Baby Reindeer has been gaining a lot of traction online after it’s release in April with millions of people buzzing about it online. The series touches on several sensitive and taboo subjects in a hard-hitting and eye-opening fashion especially given its personal relation to the creator Richard Gadd. Olwyn Hinds, the film officer across the shoots in Tower Hamlets, “It is great to be part of a project such as Baby Reindeer which highlights topics which often go underrepresented. We’re proud to champion such productions in the borough and grateful that the production made a sizeable donation to the Columbia Road Residents Association which helps to make location filming a mutually beneficial situation for both the council and the nearby residents and businesses”

Natwest Charges into the Borough
Natwest visited the borough for their most recent advert in collaboration with Team GB. In preparation for the 2024 summer Olympics in Paris, many companies have been showing their support for Team GB in the games through their commercials. The production filmed scenes across multiple locations in Tower Hamlets to execute this ad which follows Olympic sprinter Asha Philip as she runs through the streets more and more people joining on the way. They were spotted at the Locksley Estate located close to Mile End, on Agnes St, Copenhagen Place and Southwater Close.

Jess Glynne Music Video
Aspen Way Underpass, sits on the perimeter of Canary Wharf and offers a concrete urban scape with soaring highways and clean underpass sections which offer a great controllable backdrop. This time it was selected as the main location for the music video of Jess Glynne’s latest single ‘Enough’, with Jess herself running through the underpass belting out the track.
