As the second most filmed borough in London, Tower Hamlets Film Office, managed by The Film Office has had a sack full of filming over the past couple of months, with no signs of slowing down. Check out our pick of the best below!
Every Little Helps!
With Christmas fast approaching all the big supermarkets are ramping up for another big year of shopping, and with this comes the highly anticipated on set of Christmas themed commercials, non-more-so with Tesco’s offering this year. In celebration of Tesco’s centenary year, the advert shows a delivery driver taking an unexpected detour through time, embarking upon 100 years of delivering Christmas in one magical night. The production got in contact in way back in September looking for a period street they could dress, cover in snow and have complete control over.
Throughout the course of 3 days in October, they recreated a typical festive snowy London Street, both in the modern day and then also back in the early 20th Century. Flamborough Street located a stones throw from Limehouse Station offered a great location to facilitate their needs. The local community were super supportive, particularly enjoying the period transformation and the production recognised this by making donations to the Stephen Hawking School, Veterans Aid and The Tower Project. We also facilitated work experience within the locations team through our partners at Four Corners, which enable people from diverse and under-represented backgrounds to gain skills and develop their artistic talents.

The Crown Brings Us An Early Christmas Present!
Returning for a third series, this time with an all new cast including Olivia Colman in the title role, Tobias Menzies as Prince Charles and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, The Crown shot across the borough over the past year, and now season 3 has finally been released, we can see Tower Hamlets in all it’s splendid glory!
With filming commencing across multiple locations including Trinity Square, located near Tower Bridge, The Clichy South Estate (below) and Dunelm Street, we loved welcoming this much loved series back to the borough. Managing large scale filming of this ilk relies on a creating a balance of expectations between the production, council and local residents and businesses. We manage filming in Tower Hamlets to maximise benefits for the council, its residents and businesses to provide community benefits, extending borough wide – not just in the areas that filming takes place. As part of filming we obtained a donation from the production to the local resident association, to provide funds and support their community activities, improving the daily lives of residents in direct, tangible ways
The Crown is the poster child for streaming giant Netflix, a lavish big budget drama with an irresistible subject matter: the British royal family. Netflix recently struck a deal to set up a permanent production base at Shepperton Studios, home to films from Alien to Mary Poppins Returns, as the company plans to spend more of its $13bn (£10.3bn) annual production budget in the UK.
Hamzaa Gives us Some Winter Vibes
Up and coming artist Hamzaa filmed scenes for her new music video in everyones favourite location Victoria Park. Originally from the East End, the singer and pianist, who started at 4 years old dropped her first EP in 2019, the sublime First Signs of Me. Hamza performed pieces to camera sat at a desk with the eery dark skies above the park looming over her. We are about to witness even more signs of Hamzaa’s greatness in 2019 and we were glad to support her journey. Victoria Park, is one of London’s most important historic parks and its oldest public park. It has been used by millions of Londoners for nearly 170 years as a place of healthy recreation, sports, play, relaxation, filming and photography. With the expansive East Side of the park , manicured West Side and the Victoria Park Lido Unit Base facilitating shoots in multiple boroughs, it’s no wonder this location as been dubbed “The Jewel in the Tower Hamlets Crown”.
