When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther – played by Idris Elba – is once more called upon to immerse himself in the deepest depths of human depravity.
Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him – and change John Luther forever.
Idris Elba will return to his iconic role as DCI John Luther when the fifth series by Emmy-nominated writer Neil Cross premieres on New Year’s Day on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The four-part series will broadcast over consecutive nights from January 1 – 4, 2019 at 9pm.
The London Borough of Tower Hamlets once again took centre stage with the production filming at multiple locations across the borough. Having provided locations and production facilities for all Luther Series we were were more than happy to manage all of their various set ups. Key locations included Victoria Park, Robin Hood Gardens Estate, Luther’s home as well as various streets in London’s East End.
The Tower Hamlets Film Office, managed by The Film Office, had the excitement of being invited to the press screening of Episode One at The Picture House in Shoreditch. Working with Tower Hamlets Homes, we organised for a young local resident and budding journalist, Nahimul Islam, to join us. We are committed to maximising opportunities for residents by working with productions, and with Luther filming at multiple estates for the series it was great to provide a local resident the expereince of such a high-profile event.
A fantastic opportunity for someone looking to break into the industry, Nahimul (a previous Tower Hamlets Young Mayor) had the opportunity to ask the cast questions during the Q&A session and even managed to grab a photo with the main man himself.
Drawing on his experience at the press event, which included both domestic and international media, Nahimul will be writing a piece for the Tower Hamlets Homes Estate quarterly magazine, which goes out to approximately 22,000 borough residents.
“As a fan of Luther, it was an event not to be missed! It was a great event and an opportunity I wish I could have shared with other fans. The amount of people that asked to accompany me just to meet Idris Elba shows how much of a fan favourite he is. Definitely left feeling inspired and I am more than ever determined to enter the filming industry soon. For now I look forward to writing an article for Opendoor in the new year and sharing my wonderful experience!”
